BREAKING NEWS: Cambodia Announces Conclusion of Participation in Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle
Phnom Penh, September 20, 2024 – In a formal communication addressed to the foreign ministers of Laos and Vietnam, Cambodia has officially announced its decision to conclude its participation in the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle Area (CLV-DTA). This announcement aligns with a recent statement from the President of the Senate highlighting the progress and challenges within the initiative.
In the letter addressed to Mr. Saleumxay KOMMASITH, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and Mr. BUI Thanh Son, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sok Chenda Sophea, articulated of Cambodian government's decision following a thorough evaluation. The letter stated, "After careful consideration and evaluation of our progress, we have concluded that the cooperation mandate has reached its objectives. At this point, we believe that each country is fully capable of continuing and ensuring the development of its respective nation independently."
The decision to conclude participation in the CLV-DTA is officially in accordance with Article 18 of the Memorandum of Understanding among the three nations regarding the formulation of special preferential policies for the development triangle. The Cambodian government acknowledged the immense benefits derived from the collaboration under the CLV-DTA framework, expressing gratitude for the cooperation and efforts of all parties involved.
In a recent statement, the President of the Senate emphasized the importance of the CLV-DTA over the past 25 years, particularly in fostering development in the provinces of Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, and Ratanakkiri. However, he also condemned the misuse of the initiative by extremists who have used misinformation as a political weapon against the government. In light of these circumstances and public concerns regarding territorial integrity, the decision to conclude participation was deemed prudent.
In his letter, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sok Chenda Sophea reiterated the significant milestones achieved through the CLV-DTA and expressed optimism for future cooperation. "Once again, I wish to thank you for your good cooperation and partnership. I look forward to continuing to work closely together for the betterment of our nations and the region," he wrote.
As this development unfolds, the Cambodian government remains committed to independent regional advancement while navigating its collaborations with ASEAN, CLMV, ACMECS, GMS, and other international partners.
